I'm adding a glossary! When my Mom first read my blog she told me that there were numerous words that she didn't understand and that she had to backtrack numerous postings in order to make sense of it all. And I would not be surprised if there are words and phrases that I use that I have never explained except to myself. So that's where this comes from. My jargon is a collection of inside jokes from my family of origin, family of marriage, a second language, cultural envy (words that I appropriate from other languages and cultures because I like how they sound or feel in my mouth) or just funny phrases that I've picked up along the way.
Amazeballs: "amazing" or "superiorly amazing". I discovered this word on Everybody Likes Sandwiches. She used it to describe peaches on pizza, which if you have any appreciation for the weird things in life, you would understand the usage.
Bankybear: 'Vancouver'. This is my affectionate term for my place of residence. Vancouver spelled in the cyrillic alphabet (the alphabet used in the Russian language) is ванкувер. When I started to learn a second language, the two languages became fused in my mind. I started writing English characters when I should be writing Russian characters, and vice versa. And thus, Vancouver became Bankybear, which is pronounced pretty much how it looks.
Casa del Dempsey: my home. I pillaged that from Today's Letters. Sounds better than 'my apartment' in my opinion.
Cowtown: Moozh and I's hometown. Calgary, AB.
Moozh: "husband". This is the word for husband in Russian. It is literally pronounce "moosh", like "shmoosh" without the 'sh'.
Land of Plenty: Maui, Hawai'i. I think I will hereby always refer to this place as the Land of Plenty. I would have called it the "Land of Milk and Honey" but it would be more like "Land of [Coconut] Milk and Dark Rum". And I don't have it in me to wander forty years before I get to go back.
Yoob: This is my nickname for my university. It actually comes from a nickname of the nickname of the university. I felt it necessary to shorten UBC to phonetically "yoob".
Zalovka: "Sister in law". Also Russian, the word for Moozh's sisters, whom I love dearly and are a hell of a lot of fun.
